The Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton was expected to be fully open by the end of July 28, 2025, for the first time in 18 months. Lock officials said it had opened 150 feet over the prior day and a half, after heavy rains raised Mississippi River levels.
The full opening is expected to improve navigation on this stretch of river.
Better river navigation through Alton eases bottlenecks and should lower barge freight costs for grain moving south. Lower freight supports Gulf basis and can improve farm-gate prices in the upper Mississippi region.
