Basis bids for soybeans and corn delivered by barge to U.S. Gulf Coast terminals firmed, as barge freight costs rose on Midwest rivers. Empty barges on the Mississippi at Davenport were offered at 625% of tariff, up from 575% a day earlier.
Slow farmer grain sales also supported the firmer bids.
Higher barge freight raises the cost of moving grain to Gulf export terminals, which narrows the margin for exporters and supports basis levels. Buyers in the interior should expect firmer delivered prices while freight stays elevated.
