The South African rand weakened in early trade on Thursday as investors awaited the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium. The rand was 0.5% weaker than its previous close at 17.7425 per dollar.
Analysts said neither Fed minutes nor South African inflation data had changed sentiment much.
The rand is trading in a tight range ahead of key Fed guidance, so currency-driven changes in import costs remain small. Direct grain and feed price effects are minimal.
