October Nymex natural gas closed higher on Friday, its third straight gain, after the EIA reported an 18 bcf storage build versus a 27 bcf consensus. US gas supplies are now 3.5% below year-ago levels, though record-high output and cooler late-summer forecasts remain bearish offsets.
Inventories running below expectations and below last year's levels support gas prices, but near-record production caps the rally. Energy price moves feed through to fertilizer and processing costs for feed producers.
