Statistics Canada figures show canola exports to China fell sharply after March tariffs, with seed shipments dropping from April's peak of about 469,000 tonnes to 180,000 tonnes in July. Canola meal exports to China were about 30,000 tonnes in July, versus 195,556 tonnes in March, and canola oil exports nearly stopped.
Lower Canadian meal and oil shipments to China reduce the supply of protein meal available to other markets, while Canadian crushers face weaker demand and tighter margins. The trade shift is a bearish force for canola meal prices.
