Prairie canola farmers are harvesting a fairly strong crop but expect thin or no profits because China's 75.8% duty on canola seed and 100% tariffs on canola oil and meal have squeezed margins. China is Canada's largest canola seed importer, buying about $4 billion of seed in 2024.
Tariffs cut Canadian canola demand from China and lower farm-gate prices, which pressures canola meal and oil values and the supply of crush products to feed buyers. Cheaper canola meal is a partial offset for livestock feed costs.
