Feeder cattle values have softened since mid-October, when many U.S. markets reached their highs for the year. Steer prices in the Northern Plains and Southern Plains fell roughly 9% to 12% by October 31 but remained well above year-ago levels.
The update is a regional snapshot compiled from Livestock Marketing Information Center data.
Feeder cattle prices are retreating from record-level highs, which lowers the cost of stocker and feedlot inputs but signals weaker sentiment for feed demand from cattle feeders. The pullback is gradual rather than a sharp break.
