The free-market dollar rate in Vietnam fell below 27,000 dong on December 19, with some exchange bureaus quoting a selling rate of 26,980. The official central rate was 25,148 and the dollar index stood at 98.4.
The drop followed a Federal Reserve rate cut of 25 basis points.
A weaker dollar index generally supports dollar-priced commodities, but the effect on Vietnamese import costs is small and local. The move is consistent with a softer US dollar backdrop.
