A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers forecast shows the Cairo, Illinois river stage falling below 10 feet by December 11 and to about 7 feet by December 14 under a no-rain scenario. Discharges from the Kentucky and Barkley dams and Smithland are also coming down.
Stages near 7 feet at Cairo would approach critical navigation levels, forcing tow restrictions and reduced loads on the Mississippi and raising barge freight costs for Gulf-bound grain.
