The Bank of Thailand said it remains confident it can manage baht volatility after Thailand was placed on a US Treasury currency watchlist. The central bank cited Thailand's trade and current account surpluses with the US as the basis for the listing.
Thailand's current account surplus is about $17.7 billion, roughly 3% of GDP.
The watchlist may constrain central bank intervention and increase the chance of baht appreciation relative to peers. This has little direct effect on feed commodity prices.
