A new $68 million food-grade oat mill run by Green Acres Milling in Albert Lea, Minnesota, is expected to start accepting loads in August. The mill plans to process up to 4 million bushels, about 40,000 acres, of gluten-free oats per year, with most supply trucked from 1 to 2 hours away.
Added domestic food-grade processing creates a new local demand pocket for oats, although the volume is small relative to Canadian supply. It could support Midwest oat acres over time.
