Canadian food producers welcomed the Chinese tariff cuts, with canola seed tariffs falling to 15% from about 76-84% starting March 1. Canola meal, peas and seafood tariffs will be eliminated until at least the end of 2026, in exchange for Canada allowing nearly 50,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles at a low tariff.
Restored access to China for canola and meal should lift Canadian canola prices and reduce the discount buyers have faced on Canadian oilseed products.
