The Army Corps of Engineers reported Missouri River mainstem storage of 49.5 million acre-feet as of March 15, close to the 49 million acre-feet threshold for providing only minimal navigation service. The Corps is reducing releases for barge traffic as drought keeps storage low.
Reduced Missouri River releases could shorten the navigation season and restrict barge loading on the upper river, tightening capacity and pushing up freight costs for grain shipped from the Plains. This raises basis and freight pressure on corn, soybeans and wheat.
