Tulane University professor Mead Allison said water loss through openings on the east bank of the Lower Mississippi has grown about 25% since 2004. The largest opening, Neptune Pass, now carries about 14% of the river's flow after widening during high-water years.
Losing flow through bank openings reduces river depth and power below New Orleans over time, which could eventually constrain barge drafts on the export corridor. The finding is a long-term research item with no immediate price effect.
