The National Weather Service issued a minor flood warning for the Mississippi River at Alton and St. Louis and at Grafton, with crests forecast around April 30 and May 4, 2026. The Illinois River at Hardin is also forecast to rise above flood levels, peaking around May 1.
High water on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois can force lock restrictions and slow barge traffic in the grain-shipping corridor around St. Louis, which tends to lift short-term barge freight costs. The impact is usually brief if the crest passes quickly.
