Meat processors in the US, including a butcher shop in New York and one in Pennsylvania, are struggling with rendering costs. Rendering services have become expensive, and some have stopped collecting from small plants because of driver shortages or disposal requirements.
Processors are now looking at shared central rendering sites to split the cost.
Higher rendering costs and pickup gaps can push processors to store or dispose of animal byproducts at a loss, which tightens the supply of rendered meat meals over time. The effect on feed ingredient prices is likely small at this stage.
