Canada's grain sector warns that short disruptions to rail and port activity could cost up to $540 million a week, based on a new Agriculture Transport Coalition analysis. The report says lost sales are often unrecoverable and that the threat of a stoppage alone can cost up to $112 million.
The findings are part of the Too Much on the Line campaign for labour law changes.
Exporters rely on rail for more than 90 per cent of shipments, so a stoppage would hit Canadian export flows and basis. Buyers may shift to other origins, which would support competing supplies.
