US shell egg inventories have rebuilt faster than demand can absorb, pushing the national negotiated loose price to $0.22 per dozen by April 2026 and breaking stock to about $0.085. USDA's shell egg inventory report showed total inventory up 4.1% in late May.
Producers are trading at or below breakeven.
Prices well below cost of production are squeezing margins and may curb flock expansion later in 2026. Lower egg prices and cheaper feed-cost pressure have limited direct effect on feed commodity prices.
