Rand trading turnover rose sharply in the first quarter of 2026, with the South African Reserve Bank attributing the increase to currency volatility from the Iran war. Rand transactions reached $13.7 billion, up from $11.4 billion in the prior quarter.
The bank also reported that the rand's real effective exchange rate rose 3.5% from March 2025 to March 2026.
