Australian consumer prices fell 0.7% month-on-month in May as fuel, clothing and holiday travel dropped, with annual inflation easing to 4.0%. The trimmed mean core measure rose 0.4% on the month to 3.6% annually, above forecasts, leaving a further RBA hike possible.
The AUD was flat near US$0.6917.
Higher core inflation keeps the RBA leaning toward hikes, which supports the AUD, though the currency was unchanged on the day. This is a macro signal with little direct effect on feed commodity prices.
