Australian beef shipments to China have effectively stopped as exporters approach the 205,000-tonne quota, after which a 55% out-of-quota tariff applies. Australia has filled 90% of its quota, and shipments take weeks to arrive, so the tariff will apply to most later trade.
The 55% tariff will raise Australian beef landed costs in China and shift trade flows, which pressures Australian beef prices. Global beef trade may be redirected, but the direct effect on US cattle is small.
