Malting barley premiums in Western Canada were unusually small in 2025-26. Analysts cite last year's large crop, lower beer consumption and the spread of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which have narrowed the gap between malt and feed barley prices.
Weak malt demand keeps the premium over feed barley narrow, which reduces the incentive to grow malting varieties. Structural demand loss from lower alcohol consumption is a bearish longer-term factor.
