Reuters reports that the US closure of the border to Mexican cattle has fueled a cattle boom in Mexico while producers in Texas are struggling. The US previously imported more than a million cattle a year from Mexico, roughly 4% to 5% of cattle sold for US beef production.
With Mexican feeder cattle still barred, US feedlots face tighter supply of feeder and live cattle, which supports cattle prices. Mexican cattle are being kept at home instead of flowing north.
