Peru has extended its anchovy fishing ban indefinitely, a ban that had been due to expire June 10, amid concern over a possible strong El Niño. El Niño officially began June 11, and the WMO gives a 63% chance of a 2°C warming from November to January.
Anchoveta supplies more than half of global fish oil.
Warm-water El Niño conditions reduce anchoveta catches, which tightens global fish oil and fishmeal supply and is expected to push prices higher. Feed buyers face higher protein and oil costs if the event strengthens.
