The South African rand strengthened about 0.8% to 16.53 per dollar on Thursday as the dollar index eased. Statistics South Africa reported producer inflation slowed to 7.5% year-on-year in June from 7.8% in May, below the 7.9% analysts expected.
A softer dollar and cooler producer inflation support the rand, which lowers the rand cost of dollar-priced feed imports such as soybean meal and corn. The effect on feed prices is modest and tracks the broader dollar move.
