Aquaculture software firm Manolin warns that a developing strong El Niño could push fishmeal and fish oil prices higher in coming months. It names Peru's north-central anchovy fishery, which supplies about a fifth of world fishmeal, as the main risk.
The report also cites higher container freight costs and weak salmon prices as added pressure on farmers.
El Niño-driven warming could force Peru to delay or suspend anchovy fishing, cutting fishmeal supply and lifting prices for feed buyers. The forecast is an outlook rather than a realised supply loss, so the near-term impact is more limited.
