Poland has culled about 10 million poultry this year because of avian influenza and Newcastle disease. Avian influenza affected 4.88 million laying hens, which the national federation estimates is about 12% of production potential, or 120-135 million eggs per month.
Restocking takes 6-9 months, and some farms have not recovered from last year's losses of about 20 million birds.
Lost laying capacity reduces Polish and European egg supply and is likely to push egg prices higher, with recovery taking months. Feed demand from layers is reduced in the affected flocks.
