Canada is seeking to extend the tariff relief negotiated with China in January beyond its scheduled expiry at the end of 2026. The relief cut Chinese duties on canola seed from about 85% to about 15% and suspended 100% tariffs on canola meal and peas until year-end.
Canada offered a 49,000-unit EV import quota at 6.1% in return.
If the suspension on canola meal is not extended, Chinese import demand for Canadian meal could tighten again from 2027, which would be supportive for canola meal prices. Until a decision is announced, the expiry date adds a risk premium to the market.
