The South African rand was muted in early trade on Monday at 16.1225 per dollar, giving back earlier gains near 15.90. Pressure came from a stronger dollar, higher oil prices, and weaker gold and platinum after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said further rate hikes may be needed to contain inflation.
Gold and platinum are key South African exports, so falling precious metals prices reduce hard-currency inflows while costlier oil raises the import bill. This combination weakens the rand and pressures the terms of trade.
