PRODUCE has cancelled the rest of Peru's North-Central anchovy fishery, leaving over 1 million tonnes of quota uncaught. Catches reached only about 471,000 tonnes, and more than half of that was juvenile fish.
The decision follows an IMARPE survey that found too many juveniles for fishing to resume, which the ministry linked to El Niño warming.
The cancellation removes a large share of expected 2026 fishmeal output from the market at a time when global marine ingredient supply is already weak. Buyers should expect firmer fishmeal prices and more reliance on plant proteins.
