USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service reported that wheat transportation costs to Japan rose in the second quarter of 2026 on both quarterly and annual bases across all major routes. Kansas-to-Pacific Northwest costs rose 11% quarter on quarter, and North Dakota-to-Pacific Northwest costs rose 10%.
Total landed costs reached $317 to $323 per metric ton on the Pacific Northwest routes.
Higher truck, rail and ocean freight widens the gap between farm values and delivered cost for US wheat sold into Japan. This can trim export competitiveness and softens farm-gate basis, while buyers face higher landed prices.
After 11 past bearish logistics events, Wheat (HRW) moved a median -0.3% over 5 sessions (45% higher; middle half -2.8% to +0.9%), and +0.4% over 20.
