Lean hog futures closed mostly lower on September 29, with October contracts slightly higher and the rest of the board down 55 cents to $1.27. USDA's national base hog price rose 54 cents to $79.22, while the CME Lean Hog Index fell to $81.76.
The pork carcass cutout rose $1.06 to $87.80.
Lower deferred hog futures signal weaker expected returns for feeders and producers, which can reduce demand for hog feed. Mixed cash and cutout readings leave the near-term price direction unclear.
