The won weakened against the dollar on October 1 as U.S. Treasury yields rose past 5.3%, the highest in about 24 years. The won closed at 1,358.4 per dollar, down 5.6 won, and foreigners sold about $403 million of Korean stocks.
The move came despite a softer-than-expected U.S. inflation reading for August.
Higher U.S. yields strengthen the dollar against emerging-market currencies, raising the local cost of dollar-priced feed imports for Korean buyers.
