A work stoppage by ILWU Local 523 at Trigon Pacific Terminals in Prince Rupert began October 2 over pay and automation. Coal and petroleum coke trains into the terminal fell 48%, and some shippers rerouted to Westshore Terminals in Vancouver.
The Canada Industrial Relations Board ruled the stoppage lawful on October 20.
The disruption affects coal and petcoke logistics rather than feed ingredients, so it has little direct effect on feed commodity prices. It is a reminder of Canadian port labour risk for bulk exports.
