CMA CGM will add a US$150 per TEU Panama Canal transit surcharge effective January 2025 on affected trade routes. The surcharge responds to the Panama Canal Authority's new prepaid slot allocation system (LoTSA) for Neopanamax vessels and higher booking fees.
Added per-container surcharges raise ocean freight costs on routes through the canal, which can dampen containerized grain and feed trade to affected markets. The effect on bulk grain is smaller since surcharges target containers.
