The US Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District is nearing completion of winter maintenance projects on the Upper Mississippi, focused on safety and navigation ahead of the shipping season. Projects include upgraded tow rail systems at six locks so that large tows can be moved through lock chambers.
Tows of more than six barges must be split and reconnected at each lock.
Smoother lock operations should reduce delays and improve barge throughput before spring grain shipments. Better efficiency can ease freight pressure, which is mildly bearish for barge rates.
