Ag leaders are calling for better Mississippi River basin shipping infrastructure to make US farm exports more competitive. Port of South Louisiana CEO Paul Matthews cited a planned project to deepen the lower river by five feet to 50 feet so larger barges can reach the port.
He estimated the economic impact at more than $15.5 billion.
Deeper channels would allow larger barge loads and lower per-ton freight costs, which could narrow export basis for US grains, but the project is still proposed and would not affect near-term prices.
