The Memphis District of the Army Corps of Engineers completed a dike construction project at a low-water problem spot near Island 9 in Lake County, Tennessee. Luhr Bros placed over 300,000 tons of stone in about 50 days after work resumed in March 2022.
The project is meant to keep a safe, reliable navigation channel open for towboats.
A permanent fix at a recurring shallow spot reduces the risk of tow delays and draft restrictions that raise barge freight costs for grain shipments from the Upper Mississippi.
