Low river flows have allowed saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico to move far upriver, threatening freshwater intakes for communities near New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers has signed a contract to build a sill at Mile 63.7 to hold back the saltwater, which will take two to four weeks.
The sill addresses municipal water supply risk, but the drought conditions behind it also keep barge drafts and loads constrained on the lower river. That supports higher barge freight and slower Gulf grain movement.
