The USDA Grain Transportation Report put the St. Louis barge rate at 541% above tariff ($21.59/ton) for the week of January 10, down 25% week over week and 20% year over year. It was the first week since September 2022 with a rate below the prior year.
The 3-month forward rate fell 7% to 422% above tariff.
The official data confirm that barge freight is normalizing after the 2022 river disruption. Lower freight supports lower delivered costs for grain moving south and for fertilizer moving north.
