On March 15, 2023, the Surface Transportation Board approved the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern merger with conditions, creating the first single-line rail service across Canada, the US and Mexico. The STB said the merger should facilitate grain flows from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast and Mexico.
The report also noted 2022 barged grain tonnage finished 8 percent below the 5-year average.
Better rail connectivity to the Gulf and Mexico could ease grain movement and reduce logistics bottlenecks for feed buyers. The direct price effect is limited, but smoother flows support export competitiveness.
