The Corps of Engineers St. Paul District reported 1,748 commercial lockages at Lock and Dam 10 in 2023, below the 10-year average of 2,242. The lockages moved about 10 million tons, or roughly 6,691 barges, of commodities.
The figures reflect reduced river traffic on the Upper Mississippi.
Fewer lockages and barge movements signal tighter river capacity, which raises barge freight costs and can widen grain basis at upriver origins.

Moves of each commodity's benchmark from the last close before the event. Historical reads pool past events of the same kind; they describe what happened, not what will. Not investment advice.
