A Geophysical Research Letters study by Amorim et al. analyzed Mississippi River gauge data from 1963 to 2020 and found that anomalously high water has posed a greater navigation threat than low water over the past 60 years. The authors say high flows can speed currents and overwhelm locks and dams, halting barge traffic.
The study shows that flood-driven lock closures can halt barge movement as readily as drought, so both extremes add freight risk for grain moving on the river.
