The US Coast Guard issued restrictions for commercial traffic on the Lower Mississippi River between mile markers 869 and 303 due to low water. Southbound barges are limited to 11'6" drafts and 7 barges wide, and northbound barges to 10'6" drafts with tighter width and length limits.
Binding draft and configuration limits cut the tonnage each barge can carry, which raises per-bushel freight costs and can pull interior grain prices lower relative to export values.
