The U.S. Department of Transportation released its 2026 National Freight Strategic Plan to address bottlenecks on key agricultural freight corridors. The plan cites roughly 60% of grain exports moving by barge on the Mississippi and 60% of wheat exports moving through the Columbia-Snake system.
It also notes that low Mississippi water in 2022 cut barge capacity by up to 27%.
The plan targets delays on the corridors that carry most U.S. grain exports, but it does not change near-term capacity. Freight costs on these routes remain exposed to low-water episodes and harvest-season congestion.
