The Army Corps dredge Potter resumed channel maintenance near St. Louis in late August after drydock repairs, working the Mississippi and Illinois rivers to keep a nine-foot channel. The 2026 season started later than usual, but initial surveys show the channel is in better condition than most years and less dredging may be needed.
A better-maintained channel lowers the risk of barge restrictions, which helps keep freight costs for grain shipments stable.
