USDA's APHIS is expanding wild bird avian influenza surveillance to the Mississippi and Central Flyways, adding 14,500 samples to the existing 15,500 collected in 25 states. HPAI has been found in scattered U.S. backyard and commercial poultry operations over the past 30 days.
Expanded surveillance increases the chance that more outbreaks are detected in commercial flocks, which could reduce poultry supply. The step itself does not change supply.
