Federal officials reported the first highly pathogenic avian flu outbreaks in poultry in Alaska and Oklahoma, raising the number of affected US states to 32. Oklahoma's outbreak hit a commercial chicken breeder flock of 13,800 birds.
Several Midwest states also reported more outbreaks, including in commercial turkey breeding.
New commercial flock losses in additional states widen the geographic reach of the outbreak and reduce poultry supply. This supports chicken prices and raises concern for breeder flock availability.
