China is halting imports of German pork after continued African swine fever outbreaks in Europe. Italy, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine reported 23 ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs in June, and ASF was also detected in Nepal, India and China.
The United States exports about 28% of its pork production, which a domestic outbreak would put at risk.
Import bans on German and other European pork shift global pork trade toward other suppliers, and a US outbreak would sharply reduce hog demand and export demand.
