EFSA and ECDC report that the 2021–2022 HPAI epidemic was the largest yet seen in Europe, with 2,467 poultry outbreaks and 47.7 million birds culled. Between 11 June and 9 September 2022, 788 further detections were reported across 16 European countries, including mass seabird mortality.
Heavy culling reduces domestic poultry supply and can shift demand toward pork and other proteins, while also affecting poultry meal and feed demand in exporting regions.
